danah boyd

danah boyd is a Partner Researcher at Microsoft Research and an incoming Professor of Communication at Cornell University. Her research focuses on the intersection of technology and society, with an eye to how structural inequities shape and are shaped by technologies. Her 2014 monograph “It’s Complicated: The Social Lives of Networked Teens” is an ethnography of everyday teens’ practices with social media and networked technologies. She is also a co-author of “Participatory Culture in a Networked Era” (2015) and “Hanging Out, Messing Around, Geeking Out: Living and Learning with New Media” (2009). As a founding board member of Crisis Text Line, she helped build a mental health organization to support teenagers in crisis. More recently, she has been interrogating how policies that regulate teens’ use of technology are disconnected from everyday practices.
